How can I protect myself after domestic violence?

Domestic violence isn’t ever something that you have to deal with. Texas has very strict laws to help keep you protected from becoming a victim of this horrible crime. One of the protections you can take advantage of is a protective order. These orders give you legal protection that orders your abuser to stay away from you.

How long is the protective order valid?

In Texas, there are two types of protective orders. A temporary protective order is valid for up to 20 days, while a general is valid for up to two years. A temporary protective order can be extended to make the period of enforcement longer. It is up to the judge to decide the exact amount of time the order will remain in effect for your case.

What does a protective order mean?

A protective order covers several different areas. It means that the person who is served with the order can’t come near your dwelling or employment. If a minor is one of the protected parties, the person who was served with the order can’t have contact with the minor or go to his or her school. It can also suspend a firearm license.

What happens if the protective order is violated?

There are criminal penalties that a person who violates the order will face. Fines and jail time are possible. The exact sentence is up to a judge but if an act of family violence occurs during the violation, there is a potential of a minimum of two years in jail.

If you are the victim of domestic violence, you should make sure you understand the steps you need to take to protect yourself. Taking these steps in the appropriate manner can help ensure that you remain safe.
